Amlodipine contains the active ingredient amlodipine, which belongs to a group of medicines called calcium blockers. Please note that the doctor may have prescribed the medicine for a different use and/or with a different dosage than stated in the package insert. Amlodipine is used to treat high blood pressure ( hypertension ) or a special type of chest pain called angina , including a rare form called Prinzmetal's or variant angina. In patients with high blood pressure, the medicine works by widening the blood vessels, so that blood passes more easily through them. In patients with angina , Amlodipine works by improving the blood supply to the heart muscle, which thereby receives more oxygen so that chest pain is prevented. The medicine does not provide immediate relief of chest pain from angina .
